Peaceful Appreciation

Little Guy and I went for a hike Thursday evening after work.  I feel so fortunate to live so close to trails and to have the opportunity to escape into nature within minutes.  After a maniacal Wednesday, I needed a little respite.

Little Guy and I hiked and talked and played imagination games on the way up the trail.  At one steep point, we didn’t talk.

I heard the creek

running at the bottom

of the mountain,

our footsteps,

squirrels hiding food

for the winter,

and our breathing

as we enjoyed

one of the last

after work hikes

of the year.

I heard nothing else

and felt gratitude

for an escape

from the noise

in my head

and the bustle of town.
